To make every installation smoother, MicroMetl developed seven essential rules that every technician should follow. These best practices are based on decades of curb adapter manufacturing, field experience, and customer feedback.
Rule #1 – Verify the Submittal
Before anything arrives on-site:
- Review the manufacturer’s submittal package
- Confirm model numbers, dimensions, orientation, and adapter configuration
- Verify that the adapter matches the exact RTU you’re installing
Curb adapters are engineered products—small discrepancies can create big installation issues.
Rule #2 – Understand Static Pressure
Airflow and static pressure are inseparable.
- Know the required CFM
- Understand how the adapter’s internal transitions impact static pressure
- Avoid unnecessary restrictions or sharp directional changes
Proper airflow planning prevents noise, hot spots, cold spots, and equipment strain.
Rule #3 – Identify Existing Duct Connections
Know where the ducts are connected before removing the old unit.
- Confirm supply and return locations inside the curb
- Take pictures, measurements, and note any obstructions
- Understand whether ducts are centered, offset, or modified
This ensures the new adapter aligns with real-world conditions—not assumptions.
Rule #4 – Inspect the Existing Curb
Never assume the existing curb is level, square, or undamaged.
Check for:
- Rust or corrosion
- Warped or bowed flanges
- Missing fasteners
- Old roofing material or deterioration
Addressing these issues early reduces risk of leaks or misalignment.
Rule #5 – Confirm Supply & Return Orientation
Supply and return positions vary between manufacturers.
Verify:
- Which side the supply is on
- Which side the return is on
- Whether the new RTU requires rotation on the curb
- If transitions will be clean and unobstructed
A single incorrect assumption here can lead to a failed installation.
Rule #6 – Clean & Prep the Existing Curb
Before installing the new adapter:
- Remove debris, old gasket material, and damaged sealant
- Vacuum or sweep away loose roofing aggregate
- Ensure the curb surface is clean, dry, and level
A clean surface guarantees proper gasket compression and sealing.
Rule #7 – Perform a General Jobsite Inspection
Before lowering the new RTU:
- Confirm crane access and swing radius
- Ensure safe rooftop access
- Check for electrical, gas, or piping interference
- Verify adapter fit prior to hoisting the unit
A final walk-through prevents last-minute surprises that can delay the job.
Final Advice
Follow these seven rules and your curb adapter installations will go faster, smoother, and with fewer callbacks. Preparation is everything.
